You need fast autocomplete and a clean diff view, both of which Cursor still delivers. One Cursor employee’s description of the design thinking, shared on X with around 900 likes, framed it as combining “the best parts of the IDE with more recent capabilities.” That is the optimistic version. A separate developer, jasonkneen, posted (984 likes) a more pointed claim that the new Cursor Agent is essentially a rebranded Claude Code running behind a local proxy. Cursor has not publicly responded to that specific claim. Both readings exist in the community. Pick the one that fits your skepticism level.
Composer 2: The Hedge Against Vendor Dependence

Composer 2 is built on Kimi K2.5, an open-source model from Moonshot AI, with Cursor’s own continued pretraining and reinforcement learning on top. Developers found the model ID inside API request headers within hours. The screenshot that surfaced the provenance went viral. Gergely Orosz, whose newsletter reaches a lot of enterprise engineering leaders, wrote (1,252 likes) that Cursor “keeps showing poor judgment with comms, behaving not like a $10B+ company, but like an early-stage startup.” Cursor’s Lee Robinson later acknowledged the non-disclosure publicly and committed to being more transparent about base models in future launches.
Why does this matter beyond the drama?
Composer 2 is structural evidence that Anysphere is trying to reduce its dependence on third-party frontier models. Every time a user runs a Composer query instead of a Claude Opus or GPT-5.4 query, Cursor keeps more of the margin. Over time, this is the same playbook SaaS companies use when they move off AWS onto their own data centers. The unit economics stop working when you are a middleman paying retail prices for your core input.
The risk cuts two ways. Building on Kimi K2.5 introduces a geopolitical exposure that Cursor did not warn customers about. A European or US enterprise with strict sovereign-AI policies may find that non-disclosure unacceptable, even if the technical partnership is legitimate. Conversely, if OpenAI or Anthropic drop frontier model prices hard in the next 12 months, Composer 2’s cost advantage shrinks. The model’s differentiation is partly product-integration (it only runs inside Cursor) and partly price. Neither moat is permanent.
For now, Composer 2 is a competent model at a good price. An independent benchmark post from an ex-Hugging Face engineer (1,274 likes) called it “really really good.” I believe that. I also believe the launch PR is a case study in how not to communicate with developers.

Since the June 2025 shift from fixed request allotments to credit-based consumption, what you pay depends on which model you call, how much context it ingests, and how many tool calls an agent makes in a single task. Different models consume credits at different rates. Agent workflows can burn an order of magnitude more than simple completions. The same user, the same subscription, the same month, can see bills that vary by 5x depending on workflow.
Here is the honest cost by user type, based on verified pricing and widely reported usage patterns.
The beginner or weekend coder: Hobby tier is free and genuinely useful for small projects. If you write code a few hours a week, you may never hit a paid tier. If you do, Pro at $20 is more than enough.
The daily shipper, mostly inline work: Pro at $20/mo. Most of your usage will be Auto mode, which draws from unlimited model pools and never touches your credit allocation. You will occasionally hit the frontier-model cap on complex tasks. Manage it, and you stay at $20.

The multi-agent power user: Ultra at $200/mo buys 20x usage and priority access to new features. One Cursor engineer-focused community post in March 2026 captured the vibe: enterprise developers who used to spread monthly credits across a full month saw them consumed in 48 hours after a model-tier change. The team of five to fifty: Teams at $40/user/mo. Each user gets their own credit pool. Privacy Mode: What It Actually Does
Cursor’s Privacy Mode is marketed cleanly. Enable it and “code data is never stored by our model providers or used for training.” That is true. What the marketing does not emphasize is where the code goes before it reaches those providers.
All AI requests route through Cursor’s own AWS backend, which is US-based. This is true even if you configure your own API key through the BYOK setting. BYOK changes who gets billed and which models you can access. It does not bypass Cursor’s infrastructure. The code you type lives, however briefly, on servers in a jurisdiction that may not match your organization’s regulatory posture.
On March 25, 2026, Cursor shipped self-hosted cloud agents. This is a meaningful addition. Your codebase, build outputs, and secrets stay on your own internal machines while the agent handles tool calls locally. It is the closest Cursor has come to an on-premises deployment story. Two caveats. First, self-hosted cloud agents appear to be targeted at Enterprise plans and require explicit setup through the dashboard. Second, the agent orchestration layer and some tool execution paths may still involve Cursor-managed components. For a solo developer working on personal projects, none of this matters. Cursor’s privacy posture is fine. For an EU enterprise in healthcare, finance, or critical infrastructure, it matters a lot. Bugbot is a separate Cursor product at $40 per user per month. It reviews pull requests automatically, comments where it finds issues, and, since the April 8 update, learns from feedback to improve future reviews. Cursor’s announcement claimed a 78% resolution rate, meaning 78% of Bugbot’s comments led to some kind of resolution (fix, dismiss with reason, or human reviewer agreement).
The number is vendor-defined. Cursor runs the analysis on its own data. The exact methodology and what counts as “resolved” is not publicly documented in a way that a third party could audit. This is not to accuse Cursor of gaming the number. It is to flag that the 78% is a directional signal, not a controlled benchmark. Every AI code review tool publishes numbers like this. Every number is structured to look good.
What is verifiable: the Learned Rules feature is real. Bugbot looks at how human reviewers react to its comments (upvotes, replies, accepts, rejects) and uses that signal to generate candidate rules, promote the ones that accumulate positive signal, and disable the ones that stop working. This is a closed feedback loop, which is the direction every serious code review product needs to move.
What is ambiguous: whether 78% resolution translates to developers shipping cleaner code, or whether it mostly measures how often developers dismiss AI noise politely rather than fix it. Without an external study, we do not know. A Cursor-published number is not a lie. It is a marketing artifact. Treat it as such.
Deep Dive: The Enterprise Adoption Signal
NVIDIA reportedly has over 30,000 internal Cursor seats. Tom’s Hardware covered it in February 2026. Cursor’s own blog referenced it. The number has not been publicly disputed, which is itself a signal in a community that disputes enterprise numbers constantly.
Why does it matter? Enterprise deployments at 30,000-seat scale require compliance, security review, procurement approval, and executive sponsorship. NVIDIA is a technical company with a sophisticated security posture. For them to land on Cursor at that scale means Cursor cleared internal bars that most startups never even see. It also means Cursor now has a reference customer in the one category of enterprise buyer other enterprise buyers trust.
The parallel worth drawing: in the early days of cloud computing, Netflix’s AWS deployment functioned as an industry permission slip. When Netflix migrated to AWS, every other company’s CIO had cover to at least consider it. NVIDIA’s Cursor deployment may be playing the same role for AI coding assistants in the Fortune 100 over the next 18 months. Fortune 500 enterprises that were on the fence now have a story to point to.
This is a tailwind for Cursor’s enterprise ARR trajectory. It does not change the product calculus for individual developers. It is information about the market, not about whether Cursor is the right tool for your Tuesday.
If You’re European: The GDPR and EU AI Act Problem
This section is written for European developers and European enterprises. Most Cursor reviews skip it. Most of them were written by US authors for US readers. That is a gap worth filling.
Cursor’s privacy policy, last updated in October 2025, states that personal data is processed on servers “located in various jurisdictions, including in the United States.”
The subprocessors list includes AWS (US) and Google Cloud (US). The policy requires “an adequate level of data protection” for transfers outside the EEA or UK, but does not explicitly invoke Standard Contractual Clauses or an EU adequacy decision. The legal basis for cross-border transfers relies on self-assessment.
For a solo European developer building a personal side project, none of this creates a practical problem. For an EU enterprise working in a regulated sector, it creates several. First, there is no publicly available Data Processing Agreement (DPA). Enterprises must request one directly. Second, there is no transparency report covering government data requests. Third, Cursor’s Privacy Mode, while marketed as preventing storage at model providers, does not prevent all processing on Cursor’s own infrastructure for “extra features” under the June 2025 policy update. Fourth, Cursor does not currently hold ISO 27001, BSI C5 (Germany), or HDS (France) certifications, which are often the baseline for EU regulated-industry procurement.
The EU AI Act becomes enforceable on August 2, 2026. For most coding assistant use cases, Cursor would likely fall under “limited risk” obligations, which means transparency requirements and basic user-facing disclosures. The March 25, 2026 self-hosted cloud agents release is the first meaningful response to this compliance gap. It allows code and tool execution to stay inside the customer’s own network. This narrows the exposure for Enterprise customers willing to deploy it. It does not fully address data residency for Pro or Teams tier users, and it does not appear to ship with EU-specific certifications yet.
European developer sentiment in community forums during Q1 2026 has been blunt. One of the benefits of reading ten other Cursor reviews before writing this one is recognizing the patterns. Three claims keep showing up that do not survive scrutiny.

A review that avoids all three reads. One that includes all three without caveat sells.

Who Should Not Use Cursor in 2026
The hardest section to write in any review is the one where you tell a reader the product is wrong for them. Here it is for Cursor.
Experienced maintainers on mature codebases. The METR 2025 controlled trial put 16 of exactly this population through an RCT on 246 real issues in their own repositories. The result was a 19% slowdown with AI tools available, despite predictions of 24% speedup. The mechanism seems to be that experienced maintainers already have deep structural understanding of their code, and AI suggestions require verification overhead that eats any generation-speed gains. If your finance team needs to know exactly what the AI line item will be next month, you will spend your life managing usage pools and explaining Pro+ upgrades. GitHub Copilot Business at $19 per seat per month is boring and predictable. That is a feature for some organizations.
EU enterprises in healthcare, finance, defense, or critical infrastructure. Covered above. The compliance gap is real and the self-hosted cloud agents release only partially closes it. Windsurf, Tabnine, or a Mistral-based stack are stronger starting points.
Anyone who writes zero new code and only refactors legacy systems. Cursor’s wins concentrate on greenfield work and structured refactoring. If your day is spent untangling a 20-year-old C++ monolith, the AI’s suggestions require more verification than they save, and the cognitive overhead of the Agents Window adds friction. You may be better off with a conventional IDE and a more conservative autocomplete tool.
FSR VERDICT
Cursor in April 2026 is the strongest AI-native IDE on the market for solo developers, small teams on greenfield work, and organizations willing to absorb usage-based pricing variance in exchange for feature velocity. The Agents Window and Canvases are genuine product innovations. Composer 2 is a competent model at a good price, delivered with worse communication than a $29 billion company should be capable of. Bugbot is interesting, not yet proven.
It is not the best choice for experienced maintainers on mature codebases, junior developers using AI as a crutch, cost-predictability-first teams, or EU enterprises in regulated sectors. For those readers, alternatives exist and are in many cases stronger on the axes that actually matter to them.
The real question for most readers is not whether Cursor is good. It is whether the failure mode Cursor has (cost surprises, US data residency, communication missteps) is the failure mode you can live with. If it is, subscribe. If it is not, subscribe to something else and stop reading reviews. The cost of indecision in April 2026 is higher than the cost of a bad choice.
