Here’s the problem: Runway has moved so fast over the past year that most of those reviews are outdated the moment they’re published. Gen-3 Alpha. Gen-4. Gen-4.5. GWM-1. If you’re still Googling “does Runway gen-3 have motion brush in 2026,” you’re not alone — but you are behind.
This review isn’t a highlight reel. We’re going to walk through what’s actually changed since Gen-3, what the current version can and can’t do, how much it costs in real terms, and whether Runway deserves your money right now.

That’s the elevator pitch. The reality is more nuanced.
Runway was founded in 2018 as a machine learning toolkit for creatives. It’s since raised north of $630 million, hit a $5.3 billion valuation as of early 2026, and built partnerships with Lionsgate, IMAX, and NVIDIA. Hollywood uses it. Ad agencies use it. Your competitor probably uses it.
But the tool itself has gone through so many versions in the past 18 months that even regular users lose track of what’s current. So let’s sort that out.
Model Evolution: Gen-3 → Gen-4 → Gen-4.5

Gen-3 Alpha (Mid-2024)

Gen-4.5 (December 2025)

What changed from Gen-4:

Native audio. Gen-4.5 can generate sound effects that match what’s happening on screen. A door closing, rain falling, an engine starting. It’s not perfect, but it means you’re no longer forced to layer audio manually for every single clip.
Multi-shot editing. You can now create sequences of connected shots within Runway itself, making it possible to tell a short story or build a scene without stitching clips in a separate editor.
Image-to-video got better. You can supply a first-frame image alongside your text prompt, giving you much more control over how a clip starts and evolves.

Does Runway Still Have Motion Brush in 2026?
Short answer: No.
