ChatGPT Pro 200, OpenAI’s $200-a-month plan, now comes with a lower included usage allowance at the same price. If your Pro 200 subscription was active at any point from September 22 through 10 a.m. Pacific Time on September 29, 2026, you can use the previous allowance through October 29, 2026 while that subscription stays active. When FSR last read OpenAI’s help page on October 2, it didn’t say how much lower the new allowance is. FSR tested nothing.
Verdict
If your Pro 200 subscription was active in the window, OpenAI’s page lists no step you have to take to keep the previous allowance through October 29, as long as the subscription stays active. Highlighted: Plan around your own next billing date, not October 29: before it, check whether your records show you qualify, read your notice email and look at how much of the allowance you use. Then keep the plan or cancel at least 24 hours ahead, and read section 03 before changing your plan.

01 What’s changing, according to OpenAI
OpenAI’s help article on Pro plans says Pro 200 is on sale to new subscribers again. Subscriptions that don’t qualify for what OpenAI calls grandfathering, a limited time on the previous allowance, get a lower usage allowance than Pro 200 used to include. The price stays at $200 a month. OpenAI’s stated reason is that its models have become more efficient; FSR hasn’t tested that claim.

| Date | What it decides |
|---|---|
| September 22 through 10 a.m. Pacific Time on September 29, 2026 (17:00 UTC) | The eligibility window. A Pro 200 subscription active at any point in it qualifies. |
| October 29, 2026 | The last day qualifying subscribers can use the previous allowance, if the Pro 200 subscription is still active. After it, the lower allowance applies. |
| Your next billing date | When the next $200 is charged. To avoid that charge, cancel at least 24 hours before it. |
Sources: OpenAI Help Center, “About ChatGPT Pro tiers” (the window and October 29) · OpenAI Help Center, “Canceling your ChatGPT subscription” (billing date and the 24-hour rule). The UTC conversion is FSR’s and applies to September 29 only.
Two things are missing. The help page gives October 29 no time of day or time zone, so don’t assume the Pacific Time used for the window applies to the switch. And at FSR’s last read on October 2, the page didn’t say how large the lower allowance is (section 04).
02 Are you eligible? Check the dates, not just your inbox
The rule is about dates, not about how long you’ve been a customer. You qualify if your Pro 200 subscription was active at any point in the window. If it wasn’t, for example because you first subscribed later, your subscription uses the lower allowance at the same $200. And qualifying only helps while your Pro 200 subscription is active.
OpenAI says only users affected by the change will get an email with details. Its page doesn’t make that email the test of eligibility or say what to do if you can’t find one, so in FSR’s reading a missing email doesn’t prove you’re excluded. Check the window against your receipts or billing history on the platform that billed you (chatgpt.com, Apple or Google Play). A receipt may not settle it, for example if the subscription started on September 29 or a payment failed or was refunded; OpenAI says a failed renewal payment doesn’t by itself end a subscription. If your records leave it open, treat your status as unclear and ask OpenAI Support.

03 What canceling does, and what actually has a deadline
OpenAI’s page lists no step you have to take to keep the previous allowance. If you qualify, it runs through October 29 for as long as your Pro 200 subscription is active.
Canceling works in two stages. A scheduled cancellation doesn’t end the subscription at once: OpenAI says you keep access until the end of the current billing period, unless a refund ends it earlier, and can undo the cancellation before then. Once the period ends the subscription is no longer active, so in FSR’s reading the previous allowance ends too.
Sources: OpenAI Help Center, “About ChatGPT Pro tiers” · OpenAI Help Center, “Canceling your ChatGPT subscription”
You can come back. OpenAI says that if your Pro 200 subscription ended and you subscribe again on the same account, you qualify if you were active in the window. That means subscribing again to a $200-a-month plan; the page doesn’t say how resubscribing is billed. And no page FSR read promises that Pro 200 will stay on sale: it was closed to new sign-ups recently, and the Japanese edition of the help article, not updated by October 2, still carried the pause notice dated September 10.
Sources: OpenAI Help Center, “About ChatGPT Pro tiers” · OpenAI Help Center, Japanese edition of “About ChatGPT Pro tiers”
What does have a deadline is your renewal. OpenAI’s cancellation page says to cancel at least 24 hours before your next billing date to avoid the next charge, so don’t wait for October 29 if your billing date comes first. Pro is billed monthly, and your billing date decides what that charge buys.
| Your next billing date | What that payment buys |
|---|---|
| On or before October 29, 2026 | A period that begins under the previous allowance and finishes under the lower one, as long as Pro 200 stays active. You decide before you’ve used the lower allowance. |
| After October 29, 2026 | A period under the lower allowance. How long you’ll have been on the lower allowance before your 24-hour cancellation cutoff depends on the date: for October 30 or 31, little or no time. |
FSR’s arithmetic from OpenAI’s dates and monthly billing, not a statement by OpenAI and not a proration or refund calculation. Sources: “About ChatGPT Pro tiers” · “Canceling your ChatGPT subscription”
If your billing date is October 15, for example, that $200 covers October 15 to November 14: 15 days through October 29 and 16 after it, in whole calendar days. The help page gives no time for the switch, so the split is approximate.
FSR’s example, assuming the paid period runs from one billing date to the day before the next. Source for the dates: “About ChatGPT Pro tiers”
The help page ties the previous allowance to an active Pro 200 subscription. It doesn’t say whether switching to Pro 100 or Pro 500 ends that subscription, or whether its subscribe-again rule covers a subscription that ended through a plan switch, a refund or a Business workspace merge. So changing plans before October 29 may cost you the rest of the previous allowance, and waiting may mean paying for another Pro 200 period. FSR’s suggestion: weigh what the remaining weeks of the previous allowance are worth to you against the cost and timing of your next renewal.
Thinking about a refund instead? Don’t let October 29 set your timing. OpenAI’s refund page says payments are generally non-refundable; for an unused individual subscription, a discretionary refund may be available if you ask within seven days of the charge and meet its conditions. It lists separate rules for residents of the EU, the UK, Turkey and South Korea. Apple purchases go through Apple, other requests go to OpenAI Support, and a granted refund normally ends the access that charge paid for.

04 How much lower? The 10x figure and where it stands
OpenAI’s help page calls the new allowance lower and gives no number. It points to the pricing page for a comparison of usage; viewed signed out, that page’s Pro card offers a choice of three usage tiers and gives no quantities. FSR didn’t view it signed in. At FSR’s last read on October 2, no OpenAI page FSR checked gave a figure for the updated Pro 200 allowance.
Pages checked for a figure: OpenAI Help Center, “About ChatGPT Pro tiers” · OpenAI, ChatGPT pricing page (signed out) · ChatGPT Learn, “Pricing” · OpenAI Help Center, “Managing usage with GPT-6 Astra in Work and Codex” · OpenAI Help Center, “ChatGPT Work and Codex” · OpenAI Help Center, “GPT-5.6 and GPT-6 Pro in ChatGPT” · ChatGPT release notes · OpenAI, “DevDay 2026 Recap”
FSR found a figure, 10 times the Plus allowance for Work and Codex, in three other places. None is a current OpenAI page.
| Where | What it says, and its status |
|---|---|
| OpenAI’s English help page at FSR’s last read (12:19 UTC, October 2) | Lower allowance, no figure. |
| The same page earlier that day, in FSR’s own reads | A FAQ put the updated Pro 200 allowance at 10 times the Plus allowance for ChatGPT Work and Codex, and Pro 500 at 25 times. FSR saw it from 07:11 to 08:27 UTC. It wasn’t there at 06:30 UTC and was gone at 09:04 UTC. |
| The New Stack, a tech news site, on September 29, 2026 | From October 30, the Pro 200 allowance for Work and Codex goes from 20 to 10 times the Plus plan’s, and GPT-6 Pro in Chat from 200 to 100 messages a week. The report links no OpenAI document for those figures. |
| What appears to be OpenAI’s notice email, in an X user’s post | The same two changes, starting October 30, 2026. The screenshot shows part of the email, and FSR hasn’t authenticated it. |
| Japanese and German editions of the help page | Older text: both still call the $200 plan Pro 20X. |

Together they point to a cut from 20 to 10 times the Plus allowance for Work and Codex. They aren’t three independent checks: one was OpenAI’s own page, one appears to be its email, and the press report describes OpenAI’s change without linking a document. FSR treats the figure as the best available indication, not a term OpenAI’s help page states today: it is no longer on that page, FSR doesn’t know why, and FSR hasn’t authenticated the email. If you got a notice, check its dates and price against OpenAI’s current page, which gives no allowance figure, and ask Support if anything conflicts.
FSR’s inference from the three items above. Sources: OpenAI Help Center, “About ChatGPT Pro tiers” (FSR’s reads on October 2, 2026) · The New Stack, September 29, 2026 · X post by @jaredctate
Even a confirmed multiple would tell you less than it seems. OpenAI says an allowance doesn’t correspond to a fixed number of messages or tasks. For Plus it gives only estimated ranges of local messages per five-hour window, 5 to 45 for GPT-6 Astra, and calls them estimates, not guaranteed counts. A halved allowance isn’t a known loss of work, OpenAI’s efficiency claim isn’t a known offset, and nothing FSR read measures either. The Chat figure comes from the press report and the posted email: the two OpenAI pages cited here say GPT-6 Pro in Chat has separate limits but give no numbers.

05 How the allowance works: one shared pool, not a task count
Work and Codex draw on one allowance included with your plan, and switching models doesn’t refill it. OpenAI says Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500 currently have no five-hour limit in Work and Codex, though each plan still has an included allowance, and ChatGPT Learn’s Pricing page adds that weekly limits may also apply.
Sources: OpenAI Help Center, “Managing usage with GPT-6 Astra in Work and Codex” · ChatGPT Learn, “Pricing”
Other features can draw on the same pool. ChatGPT for Word, Excel and PowerPoint can, where they’re available on your plan, and so can an eligible partner app if you turn on plan sharing for it, which is off by default. GPT-6 Pro in Chat has its own limits, separate from this pool.
Sources: OpenAI Help Center, “Using Credits for Flexible Usage in ChatGPT (Personal plans)” · OpenAI Help Center, “Using your ChatGPT plan in other apps and sites” · “Managing usage with GPT-6 Astra in Work and Codex”
How fast a task uses that allowance depends, OpenAI says, on the model, the amount of context, reasoning, tool use, information retrieval, caching and speed mode. Fast mode uses included allowance at 2.5 times the Standard rate for the same model.
For what’s left and when it resets, OpenAI points to Settings > Usage. Check the label there, because the percentage can show allowance used or allowance remaining. A percentage is measured against the allowance, so one taken after the switch won’t compare with an earlier one: the two readings don’t, by themselves, show whether you did more or less work.
Sources: OpenAI Help Center, “Managing usage with GPT-6 Astra in Work and Codex” (Settings and the label). The point about comparing percentages is FSR’s reasoning, not a measurement.
06 Credits and automatic reload: what can charge you
Credits are OpenAI’s pay-as-you-go add-on: eligible features draw on a credit balance after your included usage is used. Buying them changes nothing about your plan, OpenAI says, so they don’t bring the previous allowance back. Purchased credits expire 12 months after purchase and are non-refundable unless law, contract or an approved exception says otherwise. OpenAI’s credits page adds that credits have no cash value and can’t be transferred.
Sources: OpenAI Help Center, “Using Credits for Flexible Usage in ChatGPT (Personal plans)” · “About ChatGPT Pro tiers”
The setting that can charge you without a click each time is automatic reload, where your account offers it. If you turn it on, OpenAI charges your default payment method for more credits whenever your balance falls below the minimum you set, and a purchase may happen right away if you’re already below it. The monthly cap you can set covers automatic reloads, not one-time purchases. A balance can also go negative when a task finishes after other usage has drained it, and later purchases or reloads may go toward that first.
One thing FSR didn’t find on any OpenAI page it read is a one-time credit grant tied to this change. The New Stack reported that existing Pro 200 subscribers would get 62,500 usage credits after October 29, worth $2,500 according to OpenAI and expiring December 31, 2026. The part of the email posted on X, which FSR hasn’t authenticated, shows the same amount, value and expiry, and gives no date for when the credits arrive. Neither it nor the report says whether you need an active subscription to receive the grant, and OpenAI’s credits page doesn’t say what happens to a balance when a Pro subscription ends. FSR’s suggestions: if the grant matters to your decision, ask OpenAI Support before you cancel. If your notice mentions one, look for the balance in Settings > Usage (if your account shows credits there), take the expiry date from the notice, and don’t assume the 12-month rule for purchased credits applies.

07 Your one-page check before renewal
This is a check FSR proposes, not a test FSR ran. Only look: don’t buy credits, switch plans or turn on automatic reload while you do it. Note six things on one page.
| What to note | Where to look |
|---|---|
| 1. Was Pro 200 active at any point from September 22 through 10 a.m. Pacific Time on September 29? Write yes, no or still unclear | Receipts or billing history on the platform that billed you |
| 2. What your notice email says, if you got one: allowance figures, dates, any credit grant and its expiry | The inbox for your ChatGPT account’s address |
| 3. Your next billing date, and whether the plan is set to renew | The platform that billed you. OpenAI points to Settings > My Plan for your subscription; the pages FSR read don’t name the screen that shows the date |
| 4. Remaining allowance, whether the figure shows used or remaining, and the reset time | Settings > Usage |
| 5. Credit balance, and whether automatic reload is on | Settings > Usage, or Usage & Billing in the Codex app, if credits are available to your account |
| 6. Your decision, the date you’ll act, and who has to approve it if someone else pays | Your own page |
Rows 3 to 5 follow OpenAI’s help pages: OpenAI Help Center, “About ChatGPT Pro tiers” · OpenAI Help Center, “Canceling your ChatGPT subscription” · OpenAI Help Center, “Managing usage with GPT-6 Astra in Work and Codex” · OpenAI Help Center, “Using Credits for Flexible Usage in ChatGPT (Personal plans)”. Rows 1, 2 and 6 are FSR’s suggestions. FSR didn’t open these screens in an account.
You’re done when you’ve written down four answers: whether you qualify (yes, no or still unclear), whether your next billing date is on or before October 29, roughly how much of your allowance you use, and whether anything is set to buy credits automatically. One usage reading is a snapshot, not a typical week, so note the date and the reset time with it.
If you think your subscription ended by mistake, OpenAI says to contact Support. If you can’t decide, you have two options: schedule a cancellation, which you can undo until the billing period ends, or keep the plan, pay for one more period and review your usage after October 29. Offering them as alternatives is FSR’s suggestion.
08 If your situation is different
- New to Pro 200, or not active in the window. You get the lower allowance at $200 a month, so section 04 applies from day one.
- Weighing Pro 100 or Pro 500. They cost $100 and $500 a month. Pro 500 is the only Pro plan with Ultrafast, and OpenAI’s DevDay recap puts its allowance at 25 times the Plus allowance; the current English help page gives no multiple for Pro 100. Keeping the previous Pro 200 allowance doesn’t add Pro 500 features. FSR compares no plans here.
- Billed through Apple or Google Play. Cancel through the store that billed you. The grandfathering rule doesn’t mention purchase channels.
- Joining a Business workspace. OpenAI says you can keep Pro if your personal workspace stays separate. Merging it into Business cancels an active personal subscription automatically, except one bought through a mobile app store. A merge also puts your content under the organization’s access and retention policies, offers no undo, and leaves you without self-service data export, so read OpenAI’s migration article and export what you need before you merge.

09 FAQ
Will I lose the previous allowance if I cancel now?
Not right away. A scheduled cancellation leaves your access in place until the end of the billing period, and you can undo it before then. After that the subscription is no longer active. If you subscribe again on the same account and were active in the eligibility window, you can use the previous allowance through October 29, 2026. That means subscribing again to a $200-a-month plan; the page doesn’t say how resubscribing is billed.
I never got an email. Am I excluded?
Not necessarily. OpenAI says only affected users get an email, but it defines eligibility by dates: a Pro 200 subscription active at any point from September 22 through 10 a.m. Pacific Time on September 29, 2026. FSR’s suggestion: check your billing record against that window, and ask OpenAI Support if that doesn’t settle it.
When exactly does the switch happen?
OpenAI’s help page doesn’t say. It gives a time, 10 a.m. Pacific Time, only for the end of the eligibility window. For the switch it gives a date: the previous allowance applies through October 29, 2026, and the lower one after it. FSR’s suggestion: don’t plan work around the final hours.
Can Support reset my limit, or can I buy a reset?
Support can’t reset ChatGPT or Codex limits, OpenAI says, though it can investigate usage that was counted incorrectly. OpenAI also describes purchased instant resets for eligible personal Plus and Pro accounts, depending on the account and billing country. A reset restores your allowance; it doesn’t raise your limits.

Does Pro 200 have a five-hour limit?
Not currently in Work and Codex. OpenAI says Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500 have no five-hour usage limit there, while each plan still has an included allowance. Weekly limits may also apply.

10 Methodology and limits
Starter Guide, Tier C. FSR ran no tests and measured no usage, so nothing here shows how much work either allowance covers. Section 07 is a proposal, the day counts in section 03 are FSR’s arithmetic, and the point about percentages in section 05 is FSR’s reasoning.
FSR read the English OpenAI pages cited here on October 2, 2026 (Asia/Tokyo). The Pro tiers help article changed at least three times that day in FSR’s reads; two of those changes added and then removed the FAQ with the 10-times figure. That history rests on FSR’s own logged reads: the article shows only a relative “Updated” time, and its wording may have changed again. FSR also read The New Stack’s September 29 report, which links no OpenAI document for its figures. FSR’s editor checked four of the help articles by eye and viewed the X post, which FSR did not retrieve with its own tools. Statements that a page doesn’t say something cover only the pages and passages FSR checked. OpenAI’s Japanese and German editions still showed older text; FSR relied on the English pages.

11 Verdict
Highlighted: If your Pro 200 subscription was active in the window, OpenAI’s page lists no step you have to take to keep the previous allowance through October 29, as long as the subscription stays active. Decide before your own next billing date, not by October 29: check whether your records show you qualify, read your notice email, look at how much of the allowance you use, then keep the plan or cancel at least 24 hours ahead. If you’d rather change your plan, weigh what the remaining weeks of the previous allowance are worth to you against the cost and timing of your next renewal.OpenAI’s pages settle the dates, the price and what canceling does. The pages FSR read don’t settle the size of the cut or what a plan change does to the previous allowance, and neither gap is, on its own, a reason to upgrade or to let another period renew. This verdict would change if OpenAI moved October 29 or the eligibility window, or said that changing or restarting a plan affects eligibility. If OpenAI publishes the size of the lower allowance, use that figure in place of section 04. Either way, recheck OpenAI’s page before you act. After October 29 the timing advice here no longer applies.

| Your situation | Next step |
|---|---|
| You qualify, and your billing date is on or before October 29 | Run the one-page check in time to cancel 24 hours before that date; renewing buys a period that ends under the lower allowance |
| You qualify, and your billing date is after October 29 | Watch your usage once the lower allowance starts, then decide at least 24 hours before the billing date. Billed on October 30 or 31? There’s little or no time for that, so run the one-page check and decide without it |
| You don’t know whether you qualify | Check your billing record against the window, and ask OpenAI Support if it stays unclear (section 02) |
| You want to leave | Cancel at least 24 hours before the billing date; you can undo it until the paid period ends. Refunds follow separate rules (section 03). If a credit grant matters to you, read section 06 first |

Evidence depth: Tier C, built from OpenAI's public pages plus one press report and one X post that FSR has not authenticated; FSR ran no tests and measured no usage. Read: 2 OCT 2026, Asia/Tokyo. The article's links carry no affiliate or referral codes. FSR used AI assistants, including OpenAI's ChatGPT, to research, draft and review the article. FSR's editor has a ChatGPT Pro 200 subscription; FSR looked inside no account, and the only email used is the one posted publicly on X. WHAT IT IS ChatGPT Pro 200 costs $200 a month (US list price). OpenAI now sells it with a lower included usage allowance at the same price. Existing subscribers who qualify can use the previous allowance through October 29, 2026 while the Pro 200 subscription is active. KEY CONDITIONS (OpenAI's English help pages, read October 2, 2026) - Who qualifies: a Pro 200 subscription active at any point from September 22, 2026 through 10 a.m. Pacific Time on September 29, 2026. OpenAI calls this grandfathering. - How long: through October 29, 2026, while the Pro 200 subscription is active. After that date the subscription moves to the lower allowance. The help page gives no time of day or time zone for the switch. - Price: $200 a month before and after, billed monthly. - Email: OpenAI says only affected users receive an email with details. The page does not make the email the test of eligibility. OpenAI also says a failed renewal payment does not by itself end a subscription. FSR's note: a receipt may not settle eligibility either. - Canceling: a scheduled cancellation keeps access until the end of the billing period and can be undone before then. Subscribing again on the same account keeps the previous allowance through October 29 for people who were active in the window. That means subscribing again to a $200-a-month plan; the page does not say how resubscribing is billed. - Cancellation deadline: cancel at least 24 hours before the next billing date to avoid the next charge. - Refunds: payments are generally non-refundable. OpenAI describes a discretionary refund for an unused individual subscription if you ask within seven days of the charge and meet its conditions, and separate rules for residents of the EU, the UK, Turkey and South Korea. - What the next payment buys if you qualify (FSR's arithmetic, not a proration): a billing date on or before October 29 buys a period that starts under the previous allowance and ends under the lower one; a later date buys a period under the lower allowance. - Usage: Work and Codex share one allowance. ChatGPT for Word, Excel and PowerPoint can draw on it too, and so can a partner app with plan sharing turned on. GPT-6 Pro in Chat has separate limits. OpenAI says the allowance does not correspond to a fixed number of messages or tasks. Pro plans currently have no five-hour limit in Work and Codex; weekly limits may also apply. Fast mode uses included allowance at 2.5x the Standard rate. FSR's note: a usage percentage is measured against the allowance, so readings from before and after the switch do not compare. - Credits: a pay-as-you-go add-on used after included usage. Automatic reload, where available and turned on, charges your payment method for more credits when the balance falls below a set minimum. WHAT IS NOT SETTLED - The size of the lower allowance. At FSR's last read on October 2 the help page gave no figure. FSR found a figure, 10 times the Plus allowance for Work and Codex, in three other places. None is a current OpenAI page, and they are not three independent checks: a FAQ that FSR saw on the same help page from 07:11 to 08:27 UTC on October 2 and found gone at 09:04 UTC; a September 29 report by The New Stack; and an X post showing part of what appears to be OpenAI's notice email, which FSR has not authenticated. The report and the email say the cut is from 20 times and starts October 30, 2026, and that the GPT-6 Pro limit in Chat drops from 200 to 100 messages a week. - A one-time credit grant. The report says existing subscribers get 62,500 usage credits after October 29, expiring December 31, 2026; the part of the email posted on X shows the same amount and expiry. Neither says whether an active subscription is needed to receive it, and no OpenAI page FSR read mentions it. - What a change to Pro 100 or Pro 500, a refund or a Business workspace merge does to the previous allowance. The help page ties it to an active Pro 200 subscription and does not say. - How much work either allowance covers. Nothing FSR read measures it. A FIRST CHECK (FSR proposal, not a test FSR ran) On one page, note: whether Pro 200 was active in the window (yes, no or still unclear); what your notice email says, if you got one; your next billing date and whether the plan is set to renew; your remaining allowance and reset time in Settings > Usage, and whether the figure shows used or remaining; your credit balance and whether automatic reload is on; your decision, the date you will act and who has to approve it if someone else pays. Look only. Do not buy credits, change plans or turn on automatic reload as part of the check. FSR VERDICT If your Pro 200 subscription was active in the window, OpenAI's page lists no step you have to take to keep the previous allowance through October 29, as long as the subscription stays active. Decide before your own next billing date, not by October 29: check whether your records show you qualify, read your notice email, look at how much of the allowance you use, then keep the plan or cancel at least 24 hours ahead. If you'd rather change your plan, weigh what the remaining weeks of the previous allowance are worth to you against the cost and timing of your next renewal. Open the article linked above if you can; if you can't, say so and work from this briefing. Ask whether my Pro 200 subscription was active at any point from September 22 through 10 a.m. Pacific Time on September 29, 2026, when my next billing date is, how much of my allowance I use, and whether an employer pays for it. Do not ask me to paste my notice email, invoices, account details or screenshots of my settings, and do not take any action on my account.
